Hour of Penitence
The Magdalene Order monasteries first appeared in Ireland in the 19th century. Named after a biblical prostitute who repented of her sins, the order became a home for women rejected by society. Those living within the walls of the monasteries were deprived of all rights, property and even names, not to mention the fact that they were forbidden to leave the monastery walls. The nuns of the order carried out their policy of torturing poor women not only physically but also psychologically. The last such monastery was closed only in 1996.
